Ngāti Tuwharetoa are descended from Tuwharetoa-i-te-aupouri, who was a chief from the Bay of Plenty and a direct descendant of Ngātoroirangi (the high priest of Te Arawa waka). It is Ngātoroirangi who claimed many of Ngāti Tuwharetoa’s lands for his descendants upon arriving in New Zealand. The Ngāti Tuwharetoa tribal territory is in the central North Island, around the Lake Taupo water catchment area.
